演講題目 | Galileo's Legacy |
摘要 | Galileo was the first recognisably modern scientist, combining a new technology that he had improved himself with careful observation and existing theory to change the way we see the Universe. He also published quickly, and used striking images to carry his discoveries of previously unseen objects and phenomena to a wide audience. His outspoken views on matters that contradicted established dogma resulted in a protracted conflict with the established church, and eventually resulted in his imprisonment.

Today, using telescopes in Earth orbit and radio telescopes on the ground that are direct descendants of Galileo's simple instrument we can make images and observations of things we can ever see directly, revealing a Universe much bigger and more astonishing than Galileo could have imagined. In this talk I will outline Galileo's discoveries and link them to modern observations, to show how much we have learned and how much remains to be discovered. |
